One, and only one, number is given to each piece of equipment. The “smart” number readily identifies the site, building, floor, and equipment type for every item. This type of location-based system is a must, particularly for large multi-site facilities. Developing a Facilities Standard Manual (FSM) helps maintain a uniform maintenance program. The FSM contains guidelines for equipment numbering systems and equipment list formats, including shop designations, work order types, and cost centers.

The first step when developing an equipment list is to assign a unique equipment number to each piece of equipment that requires maintenance. This unique equipment number in Saber is referred to as the MSI (Maintenance Significant Item) number. The MSI number is an example of a smart number. Smart numbering schemes can provide information regarding the building and equipment type of a piece of equipment.
