Pittsburgh Office Participates in Merit Badge University
Members of Gannett Fleming’s Pittsburgh office staff teamed with the American Society of Civil Engineers and Alpha Phi Omega, a national service fraternity, to sponsor a Merit Badge University for a local chapter of the Boys Scouts of America.
Held at Carnegie Mellon University, the annual two-day event allows scouts in the greater Pittsburgh area to come together and earn one or two merit badges. Twenty-four merit badge classes were offered, covering such topics as engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, energy, law, and geology.
Andrew Deao, E.I.T., a geotechnical engineer, volunteered to teach the geology merit badge class. Andrew, with the help of Paul Hale, P.G., an engineering geologist, prepared the class workbooks and a lesson plan. Gannett Fleming covered the costs of printing these resources for the Boy Scouts.
Thirty Boy Scouts attended the geology badge class and learned about mineral types and properties, as well as rock classifications. The Boy Scouts also had a chance to study the use of geology in the world today and explore geology careers.
