ENR Southeast Names Laas in Top Twenty Under 40

 (Miami, Fla.) Michael L. Laas, E.I., LEED® AP, an environmental engineering technician in the Miami, Fla., office, was named among the “Top 20 Under 40” by ENR Southeast. The “Top 20 Under 40” competition highlights 20 southeastern U.S.-based individuals under the age of 40 who represent the best of the best in their construction and design careers.
Laas was presented with this award in recognition of his community involvement and commitment to professional excellence and business growth. In his role with Gannett Fleming, Laas is making significant contributions to some of south Florida's most high-profile transportation projects. He is currently serving as an in-house consultant to the Florida Department of Transportation, District 6, where he assists in the management of the district's rail projects. As part of Florida's Turnpike Service Plaza Strategic Plan, he also provided guidance on the design and operation of new and existing service plazas located along Florida's Turnpike in an effort to ensure they are designed and operated to a LEED Silver standard. Laas also serves as the Southeast Regional Director for the firm’s Corporate Sustainability Team.
Laas holds both a master of science degree and a bachelor of science degree in civil and environmental engineering, respectively, from the University of Miami. Active in his community, he is involved with nonprofit organizations such as Sails for Sustenance, the Environmental Coalition of Miami and the Beaches, the Surfrider Foundation, and the New World Symphony of Miami Beach. In 2011, Laas also was honored by Ketel One® Vodka and Miami Modern Luxury magazine as one of five socially conscious men who foster strong charity relationships within the Miami community. Additionally, he was also a recipient of the Johnny Walker® Scotch, in conjunction with Social Miami, Young Business Leader Award in 2011 for his work in sustainability and the environment.
