Kovacs Elected as ASCE Fellow

John W. Kovacs, P.E., PMP, D.GE, F.ASCE(Pittsburgh, Pa.) John W. Kovacs, P.E., PMP, D.GE, F.ASCE, has been elected as a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). ASCE is a professional association whose mission is to develop leadership, advance technology, advocate lifelong learning, and promote the civil engineering profession. ASCE Fellow is the second-highest membership grade for the association, after that of Honorary Member. Fellow status must be attained by professional accomplishments via application and election by the Membership Application Review Committee. It is an honor held by fewer than 6 percent of ASCE members.

Kovacs currently serves as a vice president and regional manager for Gannett Fleming, Inc., an international planning, design, and construction management firm. Based in the firm’s Pittsburgh, Pa., location, he is responsible for significant civil infrastructure projects involving highways, bridges, water treatment and supply, railroads, and water resource and navigation structures, as well as forensic engineering assignments. Kovacs is a licensed professional engineer in four states, a certified Project Management Professional (PMP®) through the Project Management Institute, as well as a diplomat of the Academy of Geo-Professionals.

With more than 17 years of experience, Kovacs holds a bachelor of science in civil engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, a master of science from the University of Pittsburgh in civil and environmental engineering, as well as a master of business administration from the University of Pittsburgh Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business. He is a former president of the ASCE Pittsburgh Section, the treasurer of the section’s Student Award Foundation, and on the national ASCE/Engineers Without Borders Joint Task Committee. The ASCE Pittsburgh Section recognized him with the Young Civil Engineer of the Year award in 1999 and the Civil Engineer of the Year Award in 2007. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University presented him the 2009 Outstanding Alumni Service award for his contributions to the department, including active service on its Alumni Advisory Council.
