I-80 Widening at Meander Reservoir Named Project of the Year

November 4, 2010

Interstate 80 (I-80) Widening at Meander Reservoir Project(Harrisburg, Pa.) Midwest Construction magazine named the Interstate 80 (I-80) Widening at Meander Reservoir Project of the Year in the Transportation Category in its Best of 2010 awards competition. For this multiple award-winning project, Gannett Fleming served as the engineer of record for the final design of the roadway widening and replacement of eight bridges, including an innovative spill containment system.

Midwest Construction’s annual competition recognizes construction and design excellence from eight Midwestern states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin. An independent jury of industry experts judged more than 175 entries.

The I-80 Widening at Meander Reservoir was one of the largest and most challenging projects in the history of the Ohio Department of Transportation’s (ODOT’s) District 4. Located in Mahoning County, Ohio, the $95.3 million project involved the widening, from four to six lanes, of 4.5 miles of I-80 from state Route 11 to the Ohio Turnpike. The new twin 2,500-foot bridges crossing the Meander Reservoir were integral components of an innovative spill containment system designed to keep hazardous roadway runoff from I-80 from flowing into the reservoir.

This system is the first-of-its-kind for ODOT and protects the drinking water for more than 220,000 people. Despite its relatively simple design, this spill containment system provides solutions to watershed protection problems faced by transportation officials worldwide when proposed roadway bridges cross high-quality waterways.
