Drew at the Forefront of Innovative Desalination Process
October 20, 2010
(Madison, Wis.) David Drew’s contribution to an amazing new desalination method is attracting national attention. Drew, an environmental engineer based in the Madison, Wis., office, partnered with Zhen “Jason” He, an assistant professor of engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM). They collaborated on developing a method of removing salt from seawater that promises to reduce the energy costs associated with desalination. Drew holds both a bachelor of science in applied math and physics and a master of science in environmental engineering from UWM.
Professor He worked on improving a microbial fuel cell that generates electricity using wastewater, while also purifying the water. Drew and He then collaborated on a desalination method, and He modified it, adding a third capability: desalinating a separate supply of water. The process is important for Gannett Fleming due to the firm’s strong capabilities in designing and building water and wastewater treatment plants.
Drew’s work was featured at the 2010 Annual Food Processing Environmental Conference in April and the American Membrane Technology Association’s 2010 Conference and Exposition in July. The work has also recently been published in Milwaukee’s Journal Sentinel, The UWM Post, Water Online, Pharmacy Choice, and National Driller. Also, the UWM posted an article on its Web site and in its Water and Wastewater Newsletter.
