© 2009 Russell Abraham (San Francisco, Calif.) Gannett Fleming, an international planning, design, and construction management firm, was recently recognized in the American Council of Engineering Companies of California (ACEC/CA) 2010 Diamond Awards for Engineering Excellence program.
The Muni Metro East Light Rail Maintenance and Operations Facility (MME) project in San Francisco, Calif., won an Honor Award in the Transportation category in the ACEC/CA 2010 Engineering Excellence Awards competition. The facility was designed by the joint venture team of Gannett Fleming, Inc. and AGS, Inc.
Founded in 1912, Muni is one of America’s oldest public transit agencies and carries more than 200 million customers annually. Operating one of the most diverse fleets in the world, Muni’s vehicles include historic streetcars, modern light rail vehicles (LRVs), electric trolley coaches, and the world famous cable cars. The MME services and maintains the LRVs and trolleys that are critical components of San Francisco’s public transportation network. The extensive facility is constructed on a 13-acre site, making it one of the most compact LRV sites designed and constructed in the U.S. in 30 years.
This innovative project demonstrates that extreme space conservation with provisions for future upgrade to electrification control is possible. Multiple sustainable design features conserve resources and minimize the MME’s carbon footprint, helping to preserve the environment while meeting the transportation needs of today and the future.
