
Kovacs Receives Outstanding Alumni Service Award

(Pittsburgh, Pa.) John W. Kovacs, P.E., PMP, M.ASCE, recently received the 2009 Outstanding Alumni Service Award from Carnegie Mellon University’s Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE) Department. This award recognizes CEE alumni who have made sustained contributions to the engineering profession. Kovacs was selected because of his tremendous and ongoing service to the department and the professional engineering community.
As vice president and regional office manager of Gannett Fleming’s Pittsburgh, Pa., office, Kovacs is involved with office administration, technical supervision, and management of civil design for highway, bridge, waterway navigation structure, dam, railroad, mass transit, water supply, pipeline, and forensic engineering projects. Gannett Fleming is an international planning, design, and construction management firm.
With more than 16 years of experience, Kovacs holds a bachelor of science in civil engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, a master of science in civil and environmental engineering from the University of Pittsburgh, and a master of business administration from the University of Pittsburgh Katz Graduate School of Business. He is a registered professional engineer in Pennsylvania, New Mexico, West Virginia, and Ohio, and he is a certified project management professional through the Project Management Institute.
As an active alumnus, he serves on Carnegie Mellon’s Alumni Advisory Council to the CEE Department and served previously as the vice president of the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Alumni Club. He is also very active in professional societies. He is a past president of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Pittsburgh Section, serves on the board of directors of the American Council of Engineering Companies of Pennsylvania (ACEC/PA), and is the vice president of the Western Pennsylvania Chapter of ACEC/PA. He also currently serves as a director of the Society of American Military Engineers Pittsburgh Post.
Recently, Kovacs was named to the ASCE/Engineers Without Borders – USA Joint Committee, a national appointment. He is also a member of the Project Management Institute, the Geo-Institute of ASCE, and the Association of State Dam Safety Officials. Throughout his career, Kovacs has received numerous honors. Most notably, he was named Civil Engineer of the Year by the ASCE Pittsburgh Section in 2007, as well as Young Civil Engineer by the same organization in 1999. In 2000, he was recognized by the Pittsburgh Business Times as “Who’s Who in Engineering.” Kovacs resides in Upper St. Clair, Pa.
