Gannett Fleming’s Vegetated Roof Featured in Magazine
June 18, 2008
(Harrisburg, Pa.) In August 2007, installation of a vegetated roof at Gannett Fleming’s corporate headquarters in Harrisburg, Pa., was completed. This roof, which was designed by the firm’s Architectural Group and installed on a converted plaza deck off of the Gannett Fleming East Building lobby, was featured in the April 2008 issue of Eco-Structure magazine. This publication focuses on sustainable design and construction.
One of only 14 such roofs featured in the magazine from across the United States and Canada, this 1,400-square-foot, four-inch-thick vegetated roof has numerous environmental benefits. For example, “green” roofs reduce energy costs; conserve valuable commercial space that would otherwise be required to provide stormwater run-off controls; provide air and water purification; reduce urban heat island effects; protect underlying roof materials; and provide sound insulation.
Gannett Fleming’s vegetated roof material was designed to withstand chemicals found in soil, as well as mildew and insects. In addition, the design ensures that needed water is retained, while excess water is allowed to drain. Carlisle SynTec, based in Carlisle, Pa., manufactured Gannett Fleming’s vegetated roof. Houck Services Inc., located in Harrisburg, Pa., served as the contractor and installer for this project.
“Gannett Fleming’s decision to design this vegetated roof is a tangible example of our environmental commitment. We strive to incorporate sustainable design practices for our clients and within our firm,” stated Charles H. Beauduy, RA, FCSI, CCS, CCCA, a senior associate for Gannett Fleming, Inc., and vice president of Ganflec Architects and Engineers, Inc.
