Providence Project Receives 2007 Adaptive Reuse/Neighborhood Revitalization Award
May 21, 2008
(Harrisburg, Pa.) The Plant, a mixed-use development project, was awarded the 2007 Adaptive Reuse/Neighborhood Revitalization Award by the Providence Preservation Society of Rhode Island. This prestigious award recognizes significant contributions to the preservation and revitalization of Providence, R.I.’s historic resources.
Gannett Fleming Project Development Corporation (GFPDC), a national design-build firm, TerraSure®, and Gannett Fleming, Inc., were honored for remediating The Plant site and assisting the developer with transforming the historic mill into a thriving mixed-use complex that includes work/live and commercial space.
In use since the late eighteenth century, the site of The Plant held an important place in Providence’s rich history of industry, but in more recent years, the complex fell victim to neglect, disrepair, and arson. As noted in the award, “The Plant represents the growth of a new and vibrant community from the ashes of one of Providence’s oldest buildings.”
