ACEC/PA Recognizes Ned Smith Center for Nature & Art Bridge and Trail Project

April 3, 2008

The Ned Smith Center for Nature & Art Pedestrian Bridge(Harrisburg, Pa.) The Ned Smith Center for Nature & Art (NSCNA) Pedestrian Bridge and Trail Project in Millersburg, Pa., has received an Honor Award in the American Council of Engineering Companies of Pennsylvania’s (ACEC/PA’s) Small Projects category.

Gannett Fleming, an international planning, design, and construction management firm, provided geotechnical, survey, and environmental studies for the creation of a nature trail and pedestrian bridge. Gannett Fleming was also involved in the planning and design phases, including preliminary and final engineering design and consultation during construction and wetlands and waterways investigation within the proposed project area.

The NSCNA combines an art gallery and education building with more than 500 acres of forest as its outdoor classroom. However, to reach the wildlife sanctuary, visitors to the Center had to travel one mile to access a bridge that connects to the Center’s forested lands and trail system. With the help of Gannett Fleming and many stakeholders, a 240-foot, weathered steel, bowstring truss pedestrian bridge over Wiconisco Creek now provides the vital link between the Center’s art gallery and education building and its natural land and trails.
