
Matthews Named Young Engineer of the Year

(South Plainfield, N.J.) Robert B. Matthews, P.E., has been named Young Engineer of the Year by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) North Jersey Branch. This annual award is presented to a young professional who has demonstrated personal and professional leadership within his or her company, the organization, profession, and community.
With more than 12 years of experience in project management, design, planning, and coordination of transportation projects, Matthews serves as the Highway Department manager for Gannett Fleming’s South Plainfield, N.J., office.
In addition, Matthews is a member of Gannett Fleming's Highway Practice Leadership Team. In this role, he coordinates with the firm’s highway managers from across the country on business development and technical issues.
Matthews holds a bachelor of science in civil engineering from Rutgers University and is a registered professional engineer in New Jersey. He is also a member of the American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE) and currently serves as president of ASHE’s North Central New Jersey Section.
In addition to his professional commitments, Matthews is active in the New Jersey Irish-American community. He is a past president and current treasurer of the Vailsburg Irish-American Association (VIAA). Through his work with VIAA, he has helped to raise more than $40,000 for local charities.
