ACEC/PA Recognizes Interstate 83 (I-83), Exits 14 & 15 and Narrows Bridge Rehabilitation Projects
May 16, 2008
(Harrisburg, Pa.) Two Gannett Fleming projects have been recognized in the American Council of Engineering Companies of Pennsylvania's (ACEC/PA's) 2008 Diamond Awards for Engineering Excellence Competition.
Gannett Fleming, an international planning, design, and construction management firm, won a Diamond Award for the I-83, Exits 14 & 15 project in Category H: Transportation. Linking Harrisburg through York, Pa., to Baltimore, Md., a new design for improvements in the vicinity of Exits 14 and 15 in the York Area was vital to provide essential interconnectivity. Prior to the project’s improvements, this section of highway had one of the worst curvatures in the U.S. and was known locally as "Dead Man's Curve."
Gannett Fleming also won a Diamond Award in Category C: Structural Systems, for the Narrows Bridge Rehabilitation. Constructed in 1935, the Narrows Bridge carries the U.S. Route 30 "Lincoln Highway" over the Juniata River. The bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is part of the Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor. The scope of the project included the design of a new five-span, prestressed concrete bridge built adjacent to the existing Narrows Bridge to carry the two directional traffic flow during construction. The final condition of the roadway allowed the rehabilitated structure to carry two lanes of westbound traffic and a turning lane, while the new structure carries eastbound traffic.
