(Harrisburg, Pa.) The Pennsylvania Mobility Plan has received an Honor Award in the American Council of Engineering Companies of Pennsylvania’s (ACEC/PA’s) 2007 Diamond Awards for Engineering Excellence Competition. As the first comprehensive plan of its kind, the Pennsylvania Mobility Plan was recognized in ACEC/PA’s Category A: Studies, Research, and Consulting Services.

Gannett Fleming, an international planning, design, and construction management firm, and PB Americas, Inc. (formerly Parsons Brinckerhoff), jointly led the Mobility Plan’s development for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. The Plan outlines a broad, overarching vision for transportation investment in Pennsylvania through 2030, as well as 90 specific short-term action items to achieve transportation objectives.

The Mobility Plan was organized around five encompassing goals, including:

  • Move people and goods safely and securely
  • Improve quality of life by linking transportation, land use, economic development, and environmental stewardship
  • Develop and sustain quality transportation infrastructure
  • Provide mobility for people, goods, and commerce
  • Maximize the benefit of transportation investments.

To ensure that the Plan’s short-term actions were shaped by diverse groups, 20 meetings were held with individuals ranging from the highway industry and economic developers, to tourism promoters and young professionals. The project Web site – www.pamobilityplan.com – became a virtual transportation “town hall” for many Pennsylvanians to express their opinions on transportation needs and improvements.

The Mobility Plan summarizes these public involvement results, defines the state’s strategic direction, and provides a detailed implementation plan. Reflecting the needs of the state as determined by Pennsylvanians themselves, the comprehensive Mobility Plan will enhance quality of life and encourage cost-effective, sustainable, and business-friendly growth.
