(Boston, Mass.) Gannett Fleming, an international planning, design, and construction management firm, was selected by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) to provide engineering and environmental services for a bus maintenance and multi-modal transportation facility in Medford, Mass.
The Wellington Bus Maintenance Facility and Parking Garage will replace two older bus facilities for an estimated cost of $120 million. This state-of-the-art facility will maintain as many as 250 buses and offer covered storage for buses housed at the site. A new multi-level parking garage will be located above the bus storage area, providing parking for more than 1,200 cars.
“This complex will address the needs of a modern fleet with an environmentally friendly design,” explained Mike Haire, director of Gannett Fleming’s Transit and Facilities Department in New England. “It will accommodate both standard and 60-foot-long articulated buses that are designed with low floors for increased accessibility.”
Haire added: “This modern facility will be compatible with the state’s goals of transit-oriented growth; accommodate all modes of surface transportation, including buses, rapid transit, automobiles, pedestrians/bicyclists, and taxis; as well as provide safe and convenient access to the area.”
