(Harrisburg, Pa.) Roads & Bridges magazine has selected Gannett Fleming’s Youghiogheny Reservoir Alternate Steel Bridge for inclusion in its 2005 Top 10 Bridges list. The international planning, design, and construction management firm’s bridge was featured as No. 5 in the November issue of the magazine.
Located in Fayette and Somerset counties, Pa., the Youghiogheny Reservoir Alternate Steel Bridge features several spans exceeding 230 feet and some of the largest drilled shafts ever constructed in Pennsylvania. In a process similar to design-build, this alternate design was prepared by Gannett Fleming’s Harrisburg Bridge Unit, in collaboration with G.A. & F.C. Wagman, the contractor, and High Steel Structures, Inc., the fabricator.
Gannett Fleming competitively bid for the project against an “as-designed,” prestressed 12-span concrete bridge. The firm’s alternate design of an eight-span steel structure, with steel girders allowing for lengthened spans, translated into significant savings for the $25 million bridge project.
Each year, Roads & Bridges magazine recognizes bridges for their unique solutions developed to overcome various challenges. This marks the second consecutive year Gannett Fleming’s Bridge Practice has earned this Top 10 honor.
