Bob Adamski and Water for People
Country Coordinator Lynn Roberts receive a thank you from the
village of Santa Spolina. |
(Locust Valley, N.Y.) Robert E. Adamski, P.E., a director
of Water for People, a non-profit organization that helps impoverished
individuals worldwide to attain sustainable drinking water, sanitation,
and hygiene, recently visited Guatemala. Adamski, along with other
supporters, inspected finished water, sanitation, and capacity building
projects.
The group began its tour at a training session for health promoters
and midwives in Sal Quil Grande. Next, they attended a dedication
ceremony for a completed project in Vijolom. The group also visited
a water system in Viqola and a hand washing station in Cotzal. These
towns are all in the vicinity of Nebaj, which is in the Xichi mountains
where a civil war devastated the native population. In Nebaj, volunteer
engineers from Cranfield University in the United Kingdom explained
projects they were designing for the local Water for People office.
The next area visited was in the vicinity of Panajachel. A Catholic
mission in San Lucas Toliman and two nearby villages, Panimaquip
and San Martin, revealed more hand washing stations. The hand washing
stations are important for the U.S. Peace Corps’ “Healthy
Schools” project that Water for People assists. Finally, the
group visited Santa Apolonia and Ojercoc and observed a new water
system that included a mountain spring, its protection system, storage
tank, and distribution system.
Water for People ( www.waterforpeople.org)
provides financial and volunteer technical assistance to community
organizations and people in developing countries. In addition to
Guatemala, Water for People has focused programs in Honduras, Bolivia,
and Malawi.
Adamski is the vice president of municipal infrastructure programs
in Gannett Fleming’s Locust Valley office. Gannett Fleming is
an international consulting engineering and construction management
firm. He holds a bachelor of science in civil engineering from the
City College of New York and is a registered professional engineer
in New York and New Jersey. Adamski also holds a New York State Grade
4A STP operators certificate.
