The Charlotte
Multi-Modal Station Feasibility Study was awarded
the Grand Award in the
Studies, Research, and Consulting Engineering Services category
in the 2003 Engineering Excellence Awards competition,
hosted by the American Council of Engineering Companies of North
Carolina.
Gannett Fleming conducted the study
to build a new passenger rail and transit station in Charlotte’s
Center City for the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
The proposed station will replace the current outdated and inadequate
AMTRAK station at a new centrally located site and will provide a
second downtown transit center for the Charlotte Area Transit System
(CATS). It will offer safer and more convenient connections and have
the ability to expand to meet future growth projections. The new
station will incorporate all modes of ground passenger transportation,
including intercity passenger rail, light rail, local/regional/intercity
buses, rental cars, cabs, and bicycles and will be an integral part
to the Southeast High Speed Rail system and CATS five-corridor 2025
Transit and Land Use Plan.
The proposed plan eliminates multiple at-grade railroad crossings
and a freight railroad diamond crossing; reduces truck traffic through
an adjoining residential neighborhood; increases access to Charlotte’s
employment, entertainment, and cultural centers; provides significant
opportunities for retail and commercial development; and includes
plans for landscaping, parks, greenways, and bikeways. Gannett Fleming
has been retained for the next phase of design and engineering for
the station.
